Dress Up Anything for Christmas

*The following bizarre tutorial was written tag team style by Vannah and me.
And it's hard to tell who wrote what*
We need a few scraps of green felt, some faux fur, a small ornament, some ribbon, and a willing fish.
Hey! No scrolling ahead just because you're freaked out by the fish!
Mark off the measurements for your hat/the triangles it will be made of. Ours is approx. 4 inches from bottom to tip, and 3 inches across the bottom.

Anyway, cut two triangles out of bright green felt.

Pin and stitch to form a cone with the bottom open.
 Like this.
Then cut out a rectangle from the fur. This one is about 7 inches by 2.

Pin and sew it into a loop, sewing on the side that isn't furry.

Then flip so the fur is all on the outside.

 Fold it up in half.

Now thread up your needle and sew the fur so that it stays folded.

Now sew the fur to the hat. We used a whip stitch, but sew it on however you find it easiest.

 Hey, look! It's a hat!

And it seems to stand up. That's a plus.
 Now get your shiny ornament!

And sew it on as shown.

Downside? Now there's fur everywhere. Oh well.
NOW POSE WITH YOUR MANNEQUIN ARMS!
Yeah, we have a box of mannequin arms.
 How Seuss is this?
Now cut out two lengths of ribbon! This way the fish can't swim away. Haha.
Sew them onto the brim of the hat as shown~

Then strap it on your beta fish from Z Gallerie. Or on your giant ceramic greyhound. Or that huge brass monkey Aunt Myrtle gave you that lives in the closet until December when you know she'll be over, cheeseball in tow.

The point is, with scraps and a few minutes, you can turn anything into a decoration.
And let's face it, you're laughing.
We do too, every time we see it.

Dr. Seuss would definitely approve. I'm LOVING it...even if it required a sewing needle.

Weird story...

My SIL, who works at Ann Taylor, came over to break the news about Mom the other night. After a few glasses of wine, she just suddenly blurted, "Hey, I have a big box of mannequin parts in the car. Do you want them?" Naturally, I said yes. I mean, who wouldn't, right?

My oldest son and his friends arrived on the scene a half hour later after shooting a new movie all day, and they were THRILLED, pronouncing me the best stage mom ever. When your kids are theater geeks, you look at opportunities differently.

Too funny! I have 2 mannnequin legs! My aunt is in retail. She carried them on the plane with her to bring them to me. Got a lot of stares in the airport! Originally planned on making a leg lamp, but use them @ Halloween instead. So versatile, should do a blog on all their uses! LOL Wonder what they'd bring on Ebay?????

Hahahaha! I love this! It reminds me of a cermic goose that an old neighbor had when I was growing up. Every season she would dress it up - for summer it had a hawaiian shirt or floatie, for spring it had rainboots and a rain coat, and for winter it had a complete santa outfit.

LOL I love this, though! Now I just need to find an awesome ceramic animal to play dressup with...

Ok, so, I'm looking through this tutorial... scraps of felt with no apparent shape... furry thing.. you keep talking about a fish. I felt like "man I'm having a wild day I can't even comprehend a blog post..." only to hit the punch line at the end and I am still cracking up! Funny, just this morning I was saying how I should dress my duck up Christmas. I may just have to now in your honor. Thanks for keeping real and really keeping me laughing!!

Before I got to the fishy bit, I thought "why so small? I'd wear that!"
Now I can't stop laughing!

You absolutley win the originality prize for this one...I figured out it was going to be a hat...but for a fish - never! Wonderful.

ha ha and the only odd part I thought was "why does she have mannequin arms?" No "how can she be putting it on a 'live' fish?" as the comment implies or the strange look to the folded up fur (my mind's in odd places this morning)..No it was the mannequin arms LOL The Fish looks cute :)

I love this! It is so festive and different in green. I can almost see it done with red felt circles appliqued on as well.

But at least I can be early wishining you a 2011 filled with creativity and joy!
