Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask Part 56!

We're almost ready for the big reveal!
The Before and Afters are just....freaky.
But before we do that, let's ride the rails for a while.
No matter how wide a landing is to accommodate a walker, we need some added
support and safety, because here at
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask!
we really only condone us getting injured, and that's only if it's funny.
Like my recent hedgehog attack.
But I digress.
What we need here are some seriously solid railings.
We took advantage of the guest room floor still not having been ripped up
and did our painting in there.
Mark was in the living room measuring and installing a 1x4 base
over the bamboo flooring.
We have some very sturdy newel posts to anchor the railing.
He carefully decided on placement.

Once the locations were determined, he maked them carefully.

Everything was cut to fit the wall snugly.
Now for the sturdy part.
This is 3/4" threaded rod.
Using a large drill bit...
...we're going to screw it straight into the concrete under the flooring.
A matching hole is bored into the bottom of the newel post
And through the 1x4 with this paddle bit.
From there, it's simple assembly.
That puppy ain't movin', lemme tell you.

They're both also shot into the wood on an angle with the framing gun.
Using the paddle bit, holes are bored at even spaces in the base rail.

The rails glue straight into them.
Top this with the bannister and shoot them into the newel posts.

So we have railings to the left of the stairs...
...and the right!
Complete safety without compromising the open, airy floor plan one bit!
Monday, get ready for the big Before and After Post!
