The Fall of the Kraken

My mother remembers sitting and planting my cactus bed when the children were toddlers.
She remembers the cactus as being tiny and in 4 inch plastic pots.
My, how things have changed...
Dubbed "The Kracken" by regular reader Keri at One Mama's Daily Drama, this slowly invading spiny menace needed taming, and I just happened to have a husband with a machete!
I'll of course encourage safety gear here, and Sam avoided retribution by removing the pieces with his weapon of choice and not his hands.
Close to vanquished?
Relax, there's plenty more where THAT came from!
With a burst of energy I suspect was powered by chili, the hubs dug into that bed with tenacity, even going after the "groundcover" sand sunflower my mom put in.
I haven't quite forgiven her for that one.
 Hauling technique.
You get no explanation.
The roadside pile of yard debris grew...
...the man got giddy in his triumph

 ...I mean REALLY giddy.
I felt like we were sail fishing or something.
Are we done?
We did stick a fork in it, but no...

Does the garbage collection people come and get that 'yard debris'? ...I have some city collectors at the Vancouver house that I would looove to set that out for!

Aw, poor Kraken. I read somewhere that you can take a chopped-off piece and put it in the ground and it will take root and all. Do you think you could mail me a few chunks, or would it be toast by the time it got to Texas?

A prickly situation indeed!

Wow...I remember years ago needing a crew to remove Yuccas that were innocently planted and before you knew it took up a 40 foot plot! Looks like you headed this off none to soon.

Do you hire the man out? I've got about 25 GINORMOUS cacti that are at least 6 feet across and taller than our fence! (BTW, we call ours dragons.) Unfortunately, the dragons also ooze a sap-like substance that causes grease-burn like sores on the skin, so the man would have to have a hazmat suit on. I'm just sayin' since he's so giddy and all, he might like to have some more fun...

Great job!

Holy cow. I wish I could grow gargantuan cacti like this! It would help keep the dogs from trampling my gardens! :)

I don't know if you knew this, but that 'cactus' with the rounded leaves and soft spines? It's what we call 'tuna' here in the tropics... and it has a host of applications (internally and externally). Good stuff. :)
