Going Shopping

Play time is over, people, it's time to shift into CRAZY!
Mom moves at the end of the week, so more stuff goes over today,
 then the cleaning,
 then the unpacking,
but first...
THE SHOPPING!!!
We need to change out a lot of the fixtures,
lighting, fans, vanities, and oh my God STUFF.
There are so many practical, no-frills...
...um, NECESSARY things needed to get this house going.
Some things are a basic staple!
*Sequined life size parrot...CHECK!*

Sooooo...
Heading for Lowes, IKEA, The Cooper City Antique Mall, and Walmart.
BRB.
If not back, avenge death.

Let's Dish Some Skinny Delish!

Well my goodness, aren't you an enthusiastic bunch!
I got several comments and even more emails that were wonderfully supportive!
So let's talk about the trim down thing, because face it...
we all want to be our healthy, energetic best.

Remember, any size is beautiful.
The word "fat" is not allowed in my house.
A positive body image is job one,

Ms. Savannah two years ago was 16, and while certainly not
overweight at a size 15, she wasn't thrilled.
Funny, smart, quirky, and a serious individual,
my little blossom wanted to have a more attractive silhouette,
but dual enrollment in high school and college with very high grades,
volunteer work, and a social and home life take bite out of the clock.
She switched her diet to pescetarian, a faction of vegetarian that includes seafood.
Big brother Thom is a life long vegetarian, so I was already making two versions of dinner
each night.
You'll notice our recipes ALWAYS include alternatives.
Did the size 15 person go into hiding?
 Um...not quite.
This was taken a week ago before the prom.
Savannah is a size 11, and her changes included more working out,
one portion at dinner, buh bye sodas,
and lower fat snacks like nuts, Wheat Thins, and tons of fruit.
That outfit, by the way?
It's mine.

Soup is huge around here.
We're going to make 4 different soups today at the same time.
You can set out a buffet or freeze some for a busy day,
but with a salad, fruit, and a dipper, these are balanced one-pot bliss.
I'll give the shopping list for all 4, and the ingredients per soup.
Now, go find 4 pots!

4 cans of Spanish diced tomatoes with green chilies
1 can of diced tomatoes, the plain stuff
7 cans of tomato sauce
5 onions, diced small
4 large carrots, diced small
4 ribs of celery diced small
4 cans of Mexican corn
2 cans dark red kidney beans
4 cans light red kidney beans
3 cups skim milk
8 ounces fat free sour cream
1 32 oz box vegetable broth
2 tbsp herbs de Provence
4 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 lbs very lean ground beef or turkey
1/2 block reduced fat processed cheese (Velveeta, okay? Be quiet)
1 pound chopped broccoli
2 tbsp chopped garlic
2 tbsp Adobo seasoning
4 packets of chili seasoning
1 cup sherry
2 cups Cabernet
1/2 cup Chardonnay
An official drizzle of Canola oil

In one pot, saute the meat type stuff on medium until browned.
Drain off any of that weird fat stuff. I like to pat it down with a paper towel while I'm at it.
Don't judge me.

In another pot, drizzle the oil and add the onions, carrots, celery, garlic, and Adobo seasoning.
Saute until the veggies soften, about 10 minutes.
Transfer equal amounts to each pot.
No one will ever know you just snuck vegetables in their food.

Now then....READY?
In the pot with the meat, deglaze with one cup of Cabernet, then
add 2 cans tomato sauce, two cans corn, two cans diced tomatoes with green chiles, 1 can dark red kidney beans, 2 cans light red kidney beans, and 2 packets of chili seasoning.
In another pot with the just the veggies, deglaze with one cup of Cabernet, then
add 2 cans tomato sauce, two cans corn, two cans diced tomatoes with green chiles, 1 can dark red kidney beans, 2 cans light red kidney beans, and 2 packets of chili seasoning.
In another pot with the just the veggies, add the vegetable broth and bring to a bubble on medium
heat. Add the mustard, broccoli, cheese, and Chardonnay.
In the last pot with the just the veggies, add the plain diced tomatoes, 2 tbsp herbs de Provence, skim milk, sherry, and 3 cans of tomato sauce. Bring to a simmer over medium, then turn to low.
Put the fat free sour cream in a bowl and ladle about 1 cup of hot soup over it.
Stir until smooth, bringing the temperature of the sour cream up,
then add it to the pot slowly, blending it in.

Allow all of this to simmer for an hour.

At dinner, set it out with baked tortilla chips, avocado slices, shredded cheese, salad, oyster crackers,
anything you'd like!
Each soup is high fiber, low fat, and big on flavor!
And with the process I have described, it takes about 45 minutes to get this to simmering.
Freeze the leftovers, and you have a meal in minutes at your fingertips.
Or, hey...have people over!
Soup is a great buffet item, and this array would make anyone happy!
Tomorrow, let's chat about desserts, shall we?
Because if you think I gave up chocolate,
Au. Con. TRAIRE!

Let Me Give You the Skinny

Okay, people, the new size 10 me has been around for a year!
(And before I start this little diatribe, please note:
I looked pretty happy at all weights in my life.
Thin does not mean gorgeous.
No matter what size you are buying,
Girl,
you are powerful and fierce!)
March 2011, at a friend's wedding...
Size 24, 220 pounds.
My husband had me by 20 pounds.
I could borrow his shorts.
 I'm 5'7", he's 6'3".
My math needed a tweak.
By her first anniversary party, no one recognized me
Lifestyle changes and a few rewards shaved off 85 pounds at age 51.
This was my favorite visual aid, and it still gets used,
like after the call of the wild baklava this last weekend was too loud to ignore!
I prefer facing 52 like this.
I've had some email requests with all those New Year's resolutions still fresh
on how I made this woman leave my house for good.
(Side note: Savannah went from a 15 to an 11 in the last few months,
and is still gym-ratting with her Dad.)
Putting down my wine glass helped.
Did you realize a standard 6oz glass of chardonnay has 175 calories?
Who the hell drinks six ounces?
My glasses held 10 ounces, times 3 *cough* glasses,
and before you know it...
900 calories!!!
...or more. Just sayin'...
You could easily drink a good portion of the calories you're allowed in a day.
That goes for any other alcohol, and read the soda bottle while you're at it.
Crystal Light and I have become chummy.
They also have cocktail flavors on the shelf!
I can easily do a 5 calorie virgin mojito with zero guilt.
Bloody Marys are a favorite brunch indulgence, so I simply skip the vodka,
use V-8, and make it into a bonus veggie for the day.
And non-alcoholic champagne was the base for some pretty tasty mimosas
over the holidays, at only 60 calories.
I can be a little bad, right?
I hate the gym, so instead, if the store is within three miles, and I'm not getting lumber,
the shopping cart and I head off at a BRISK pace.
No lolligagging, girls!
Add some ankle and wrist weights so you look like a total dork, and most teenagers
will even grant you a slice of precious solitude...
not The Minions, mind you...
...but in reality, I probably boost their cool cred.
Food, however, is the big thing.
Tomorrow, I'd like to share four of my favorite soup recipes,
all with a bite taken out of their bottom line, that you can make simultaneously
and freeze ahead if you like!
One meaty chili, and three vegetarian soups, with one of those being actually vegan,
should make everyone in the house happy.
Because I'm a new convert to the fact that my love of these...
...should not make me and my mirror break up.
Yesterday, February 19, 2013, 145 pounds.
145???
Where's my Pounds to Lose Jar???
*Damned baklava*

NOTE: I'm not a weight loss guru or expert.
I'm a wife and mother who cut down on alcohol and fat and started exercising more, period.
Consult a doctor before starting any weight loss program.
Set realistic goals not based on super models,
and remember, you are gorgeous at any weight.
Work it, Girl.

Where Did the Weekend Go? Walking Porn Part Deux

So, when last we left off, it was almost 60 degrees, and I was finally not bundled like an Eskimo.
I did however have a sweater skirt that made me look like I was sporting a knitted bustle.

So, how many uses can you think of for orphaned silverware?
Allow me to show you a few...
like hollow handle bud vases!
This teapot with a spill of crystals makes a wonderful garden accent.
Add more baubles, and you have wind chimes.
And as a fan pull???
I need to do this.
A little ball point pen action would definitely make a grocery list more fun.
 Pendants?
I think I need to hit the flea market.
Like soon.
~Random shot of things growing wild~
Ms. Wayte prefers no photos of her wares...
...but she graciously allowed me one just to tempt you.
The sparkle on this shawl was AMAZING.
~More wild~
~Most wild~
 And speaking of sparkle...
These canvases were not only luminous and dream-like...
...they had amazing texture, like glass crushed and applied.
The effect was stunning.
LOVE this pair of 3D wall hangings.
You could make your living room spawn.
Now, about those orchids you can't kill...
...you could dot your entire home with these and never worry.
 No, they aren't silk.
Nor are they some amazing dried version.
Nope, these ruffly, gorgeous little gems are....
 ...clay sculptures!
Look at the perfect details in her work.
The larger sculptures are still only $99...
...which is a bargain if you factor in the cost of replacing everything you kill.
Ever wanted a quickly set up, yet show stopping water feature?
This one was nearly 7 feet high!
Set it up, plug it in, scoot a couple plants over...
one stunning focal point to go.
Bread knives in a rainbow of stains...
Paper mache' and fabric on wire made these fun little gems.

I wouldn't mind a little flurry of these fluttering from the ceiling.
Just in case you think you've seen everything...
...allow me to assure you, you have not.
 It's a fish bowl!
A bank!
A nightlight!
Good God, who thought up this train wreck?
Nice little idea, embellishing with wire and marbles.
Not a coffee fan?
 Um...no problem.
Did I mention the live music?
A little big band was filling the air as we grabbed some libations.
We do know a few back routes....
...which is an excellent way to avoid the wall-to-wall crush of people.
Not to mention, the views are better.
Sam Art Glass...I was frozen in place by her booth.
The colors and textures were breathtaking.
She was very accomodating and showed me all of her work, explaining the stories
behind some of the pieces.
This one in particular was her personal fantasy of swimming with dolphins...
...and magically transforming into a mermaid!
Although the bright jewels of her creations were show stoppers...
There was one piece in particular that had drawn me in there...
...and it wasn't even this brilliant bowl swept with my favorite koi.
It was this...

Hold all applause til the end.

Do you have ANY idea how hard it was not to touch that???
 No forest in your backyard?
Just set one up on the coffee table!
These are way beyond any wire trees I've ever attempted.
If I could own one, this would be it.
 Why?
 My own swing, for starters.
Some booths were so crowded it took the zoom to get a glimpse.
 Well worth it though.

And then, I hit the gardens...

Have you been collecting wine corks?
How about some living refrigerator magnets?
Even a portrait made from macaroni or a pizza menu would look better
held by these.
I hope you enjoyed this year's little wander through my backyard.
Anyone still wonder why you'd have to pry me out of here with a crowbar?
