Coconuts, that is.
When I mentioned in a post that COCONUTS weren't exactly holiday decorations, Carol over at
The Antique Texan totally called me out and threw down the gauntlet. She challenged me to make something shiny out of these things, so without further ado,
we're going full on Christmas with these babies!
So, what you'll need to recreate this potential disaster is:
3 whole coconuts
2 halves of coconut shells, which have been used around here to make galloping hoof sounds. I know. We really just aren't right at all.
Silver spray paint
Hot glue
Glitter
Flat backed gems
Flat backed marbles and embellishments
Pearls by the yard
A display stand. I used THIS ONE
Haul your weird materials outside.
Spray paint your coconuts silver. This only took one coat. I was really surprised.
Okay, now stare at it and hope for an epiphany.
As said Eureka! moment hits, hope that this is really going to work.
Grab 9 of these and the hot glue.
Glue them to the funny little indentations.
Are you really still reading this?
Make swirls with the hot glue and sprinkle glitter all over the place.
Have a sip of wine and be amused at how many projects you have going at once.
Now, pile this hot mess into a pedestal bowl. Add some SILVER SEASHELLS. Fill the coconut halves with gems and marbles. Wind some pearls through the whole thing. Go ahead and hot glue a big glittery butterfly to it as long as you're at it.
Step 217: spray paint some starfish to distract your audience.
Okay, fine, I actually like it. Thanks, Carol, for making me think outside the box!
Cost of this project? I had everything on hand, so it really only cost me my dignity.
Ha. That is AWESOME. You know what would also be sweet? A garland made from pieces of coconut shell. Love how you used the pearls, btw.

This turned out pretty nice. I was a little concerned when I first saw the spray painted shells...Great Job :)

One of the krewes at Mardi Gras in New Orleans throws decorated coconuts at one of the parades. Well, they don't really throw them, 'cause that could hurt! But they do pass them out to the crowd! I actually have one. Now I am thinking about what else I can do with it! Great post!
