A Teensy Hat

My lovely daughter, Savannah, is quite crafty. She also has her own unique style. You may have caught that by the fact that she makes, wears, and sells stuff like THIS:

Why yes, that is a koala hat.
But when your best friend is taking you to your very first rock concert for your 16th birthday, AND it's to see Adam Lambert, well, we need to glam it up a bit, don't we? And I think this would also be fun for a lot of those costumes you're planning for next month, hint hint HINT.
So gather your gear! To make our teeny tiny top hat, you'll need:
Some flexible plastic, like a report cover. We used the box from my new bluetooth.
Scrap cardboard, like the box pictured
A fabric covered hairband. Ours were 3 for $1 at Dollar Tree
Scrapbooking paper
Some lace trim
2 different bits of ribbon
A fake flower (Not pictured above, we apologize, it was a last minute epiphany)
A protractor
A marker
Mod Podge
Hot glue
Scissors

First, take the plastic and make a cylinder 4 1/2" high. Hot glue the seam
This of course is the stove pipe portion of your hat.
Then roll your cylinder over the scrapbook paper and mark it. You can probably tell we didn't do a lot of fancy measuring for this.
 Cut the paper to size.
Grab your decoupage medium.
Slather the wrong side of the paper.
And then roll your plastic cylinder over it.
Next, trace the circumference of the cylinder on the plastic. Add an inch and cut out the circle
Make little V shaped notches in the circle down to the line you traced.
Now fold that extra bit of plastic down.
Fit those little tabs inside the cylinder.
Run a bead of hot glue around the seam to secure it.
Trace the circle onto your paper.
Cut it out and Mod Podge it over the plastic.
Note: we did not decoupage over the paper. Savannah wanted a more matte finish.
 Now get your cardboard.
We eyeballed an exaggerated size brim for the hat and used a protractor to get a perfect circle.
Because when you have 3 math geeks and a husband who teaches math, you have crap like that just littering the house.
 There we go.
For the brim, we're using the black side of the paper. Trace two circles and add a little extra to one of them when you cut them out.
Mod Podge the cardboard and the larger circle together.
Smear a little more of the medium around the edges and fold the excess paper over.
Now MP the smaller paper circle over this.
Hot glue the hat together. Now for the fun stuff.
We took a little red ruffled lace trim out of the stash and glued that on as a hat band.
We then snipped the stem off a glittery poinsettia and added that to the mix.
This is the Glam Nation Tour, after all.
Some shiny red satin to accentuate the top.
Next, we glued two lengths of the red lace to the hair band.
And we hid the seam with some red and black satin ribbon.
Not girlie enough. How about a bow and some ribbon streamers?
Maybe a little felt heart and a rhinestone? Around here, over the top is our motto. Once you're happy with the amount of glitz, hot glue the hat to the band. We then took a U shaped household repair needle and did a couple of stitches through the hat and around the hair band just to make sure this was surviving excited teenager flailing.
Total cost? Well, we had all of this. I'd estimate less that $4 easily though.
Baby daughter outrageously decked out for a concert? Pretty priceless.

  3. Is it okay that I was thrilled she insisted on a tank top under the bustier? And then wore a hoodie over it?

  7. I love that she (and you!) wanted to wear a tank top. Reminds me of my own modest self in high school. (It's college-age when you really need to start worrying!) She looks absolutely fantastic. Strange question- is that her friends real silver hair? I ask because I want to be a robot for Halloween and would love my hair to look like that!

  8. Hi Amanda,

That isn't her real hair. The girls make elaborate costumes and style wigs to go with them. She's sporting one she cut and colored herself in a silver/blue/purple color that was really cool. If you'd like more information, shoot me your email address and I'll ask her for instructions and sources.

  9. Savannah is so lucky to have an encouraging mom like you! I wish my mom had been all for helping me create fun accessories for my unique outfits in high school. Of course, it's understandable that she flipped the day I tried to waltz off to school in a 10-inch-long purple satin skirt held together solely by 2 safety pins. :)

I am super impressed that you didn't have to "make" her wear the tank top. You've definitely done something very, very right. Especially in a day and age when 13-yr-old girls are dressing like hookers!
(God, I sound like my mom. And i'm only 31.)

  10. I'm betting they had a great time... and I LOVE that she didn't go out half naked. It drives me crazy to see young girls not dressed. Go buy her a tank top in every color and you will be good to go! Kudos to her for having some class.

  11. A tank top is a lot of skin for this child. She's a T-shirt and baggy jeans type of girl.

And yes, I'm extremely proud of my little bunneh.

  16. The girls look amazing! You are the coolest mom ever, and the top hat is ridiculously accomplished for a made-it-out-of-nothing creation. What a blast of a tutorial, you two! Hope she had huge fun at Adam's show.

  30. Wow, stylin'! When did we start dressing up for concerts? Having only attended 2 (and one was a country concert) I'm kind of clueless about this whole process. It looks like she knows what she's doing! Love it.
