Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask Part 39!

A couple days a go, a big delivery truck from Lowes pulled up,
and you know what that means, Besties...
The new appliances are here!
That means that
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask!
is about to wrap up the kitchen segment!
We picked out the fridge before we started the framing, so the niche was built
specifically for it.
There's a little space on each side to slip in a broom so it's handy,
and clearance on top for storage.
We're also proud to reveal...
...the new dishwasher!
It's a smaller 24" wide model that's almost silent.
One person does not generate a lot of dishes.
In fact, she'll probably use...
...the hand wash method!
I picked up the stainless steel sink as well.
Our choice was the BOHOLMEN double sink with a built in drainboard,
which will making soaping up a couple of plates convenient.
The disposal will be installed in the small sink, and we're going to make a
cutting board to fit the larger sink, making this
a simple prep area for my mother.
She'll be able to open the base doors and get her wheelchair in close.
What are we making the cutting board out of?
I'm glad you asked that...
We brought home the NUMERAR countertop in Beech.
Mom was originally looking at a composite material, which I
talked her out of while staying close to budget.
This is a solid material butcher block counter that can be sanded
in case of accident.
I despise laminate.
I also hated the thought of $5000 for granite.
The entire galley counter only cost $300, and the sandy color will look great with the theme, not
to mention the bamboo floors, and it will really set off the backsplash.
Wait, what backsplash, you ask?
May I present to you our final choice for backsplash!
These 12x12" sheets of tile mosaic are a mix of clear glass
and white marble.
At only $4.98 a sheet, the full 37.5 square feet of wall will be under $200!
This is available at Lowes if you're drooling.
All this means we're within a week of the reveal!
With the reveal will come the final price tag, and I think you'll be impressed!
This is why we DIY, isn't it?
And I have a couple of little surprises planned for Mom that she's not aware of.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
She's figured out how to find my blog, so no blabbing!

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask Part 38!

Okay, the guest bathroom is tiled.
 Relax, you'll get a tutorial.
We used a glossy white subway tile for a classic, clean, vintage look...

...that was really plain.
Sure, we saved some Washingtons doing it like this, but we sacrificed pizazz.
And here at
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask!
we're all about some splash with our shortage of cash!
I sketched out an evil plan.
 Savannah then measured...
 ...marked...
 ...taped...
...using a level for perfect, straight lines...

 ...and gloated.
 (Sneak peek...
 ...at the master bedroom color.)
Samwow taped off and painted the dark vanity mirror a gloss white.
Do yourselves a favor and remember to sand any finish first.
We used a very fine grit.

The frame color is a darker aqua than the wall color.

The horizontal stripe is white to match the mirror.

The colors look good together, eh?
By the way, help us decide on a front door.
We needed a door with a light low enough for the homeowner to
see who's on the porch from her wheelchair.
Either choice will be painted brown as per the HOA.
Do we like the white one?
Or do we prefer the blue?

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask Part 37!

 Pantry time!
We put together this 88"x15" box at the same time we did all the cabinets.
This unit is near the range, and the door will pull out.
Right now, the door is leaning against the wall, and here at
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hard Core Remodeling but Were Afraid to Ask!
that will never do!
It's actually very simple.
We've already shown you how to make the drawers.
These, however, will have a slightly different front treatment.
The pantry door can either be attached with hinges and swing, or it
comes with a template to show you where to drill to make it slide.
I was concerned that the back of a cabinet might be inaccessible for
my wheelchair bound mother, so all of the lower cabinets and pantries are sliders.
We'll be attaching a pair of shelves to the top and bottom of the door
with the same clips we used for the drawer fronts.
And we'll add a screw, leaving 1/4" exposed.
The rods that we used with the other drawers needs a little alteration.
 Take off the usual ends...
...and pop these, which are included, in them.
 Click the drawer into place.
Snap the newly inserted rod end onto the screw.
Slide the sleeve down over it to cover.

 Now install the drawer rails.
We have a new part to show you.
We call this The Drawer Whisper.
These snap on the back of the rail.
When the drawer closes, this stops it and slides it gently to a stop.
No squished fingers!
Once those are added, click the fronts designed for inner drawers onto the frames
and slide them on the rails.
Make sure you leave the top and bottom rail pairs free.
Ready to wrestle?
Thom and I toted the door with attached load-bearing drawers on in.
Ready....aim...
 ...SLIDE!
Match the drawer sides with the rails.

And close!
 We're off by a bit.
 Not to worry.
These screws adjust it side to side, in and out.
It's easy to make it plumb.
The very top of the pantry is getting shelves...
...and a simple cabinet door.
 And Voila!
A sleek, slim cabinet that takes up a mere 15 inches of floor.
But check out all the storage!
And nothing will be out of reach.
This can hold spices, cookware, and dry goods 18" from the stove.
Gourmet ease at your seated fingertips.
I think we're ready to get decorative, don't you?
